Scenic Carpenter

With national visibility and local accolades as the tri-state area’s top source for robust and entertaining educational experiences, Historic Hudson Valley (www.hudsonvalley.org), Westchester’s largest cultural organization welcomes more than 300,000 visitors a year to our popular family friendly events including the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze and Horseman’s Hollow.

Historic Hudson Valley seeks a seasoned scenic carpenter to join its event production team. The successful candidate will be physically fit, able to lift/carry 40 lbs. and have a minimum of five years of experience building large-scale scenic elements, leading crews, and working collaboratively with theatrical trades including lighting, electrical, and rigging. Experience initiating projects in a scenic shop and seeing them through from field installation to strike is necessary.  The Scenic Carpenter will be responsible for managing Historic Hudson  Valley’s scenic shop, including creating project timelines, material lists, and staff schedules; making sure staff has proper training and equipment; and ensuring safe working practices and conditions. Experience with outdoor theater, festivals, road shows, and in similar environments is helpful.

Candidates must have excellent carpentry skills and the ability to execute designs from plans and sketches. She/he must be able to work independently, as well as to manage the work of others. Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills are essential. Candidate must be computer literate and comfortable working with Microsoft Office, as well as scheduling and project management software. Familiarity with common drafting programs such as VectorWorks or AutoCad is helpful.

This is a full-time, 10-month/year (March–December) position based in Croton on Hudson, New York, with regular travel to central Long Island during the months of September – November. Some evening, weekend, and holiday-season hours at special events are required.
