The original Clermont mansion was built around 1740 and burned to the ground in 1777, as punishment for supporting the rebels during the American Revolution. Martha Livingston rebuilt the home during the Revolution. Her son, the home’s most famous resident, was Robert R. Livingston, Jr., Founding Father of the United States.
